WEST SOUND CONSERVATION COUNCIL ENDORSEMENTS
(updated 8 Oct 2018)
VOTE YES ON INITIATIVE 1631 TO
put a fee on polluters: I-1631 puts a fee on the largest polluters in the state, such as the oil industry as well as utilities that haven’t switched over to clean energy.
invest in clean energy for Washington: I-1631 will generate over $1 billion per year that will be invested in clean energy projects like wind and solar energy, cleaner transportation options, energy efficiency, forests and clean water projects that reduce pollution, and home retrofits and weatherization.
create clean-energy jobs: I-1631 will help to create thousands of jobs in clean energy and clean-energy manufacturing, the creation and management of healthy forests, clean air and water, and it will help citizens of Washington transition to the clean energy economy.
WHO OPPOSES I-1631?
The petroleum companies. “Five big oil companies make up 99 percent of the ‘No’ campaign’s funding,” with which they “buy misleading TV ads and flood our mailboxes with false information.” Jeff Johnson, Aiko Schaefer, and Ken Lans, “Big Oil vs. clean energy, healthier communities,” Seattle Times, September 23, 2018, p. A19.
The petroleum companies worry that Washington State’s shifting from the industry’s greenhouse-gas-emitting fuels over to clean, renewable energy will influence other states to do the same.
Yes, we hope it does.
STOP THE WORLD FROM BURNING
Frequent wildfires, longer droughts, stronger hurricanes, rising sea levels, more floods, forced mass migrations, and rapid rates of animal and plant extinctions . . . what was forecast by scientists is now occurring, and they say it will get worse if we don’t stop pouring greenhouse gases into our atmosphere. Decisions we make now (such as how we vote) will determine the severity of the climate we live in. The future for us, our children, and our grandchildren will be challenging, or it will be chaotic and dangerous, or it may not be not survivable.
Passing Initiative 1631—with its actions to move our state away from fossil fuels to a clean energy economy--makes a statement: it shows that in Washington State we’re doing what we can, where we are, to change humanity’s destructive course. Vote yes on I-1631.
