Kitsap County Planning Commission to Hold Hearings on Draft Critical Areas Ordinance

(Port Orchard, WA) - The Kitsap County Critical Areas Ordinance (CAO) Draft was open for public comment 3/1-3/31. The Kitsap Planning Commission is scheduled to hold three hearings to provide additional opportunity to comment on the draft.  The County has prepared a preliminary matrix of the March public comments and provided staff responses.  

The County will hold three Open Houses, followed by Planning Commission Hearings, for the Critical Areas Ordinance on the following dates:

Tuesday, April 25
Kitsap Fairgrounds President’s Hall
1250 NW Fairgrounds Road in Bremerton
Open House—5 p.m. 
Planning Commission Hearing—6 p.m.

Thursday, April 27  
Poulsbo City Hall,  200 NE Moe Street in Poulsbo
Open House—5 p.m. 
Planning Commission Hearing—6 p.m.

Tuesday, May 2
Commissioners Chambers
Kitsap County Administration Building
619 Division Street in Port Orchard
Open House—5 p.m. 
Planning Commission Hearing—6 p.m.

The matrix, and draft Ordinance, are now available for additional public review. Additional comments can be provided to the Planning Commission as written or oral testimony at their hearings.

The Kitsap County Critical Areas Ordinance is undergoing a required update under the Washington Growth Management Act. The CAO (Kitsap County Code, Title 19), is the portion of local code which provides development standards for protecting the environment and minimizing risk to human safety. Critical areas include:

  • Wetlands,
  • Fish and Wildlife Habitat Conservation Areas,
  • Geologically Hazardous Areas,
  • Frequently Flooded Areas, and
  • Critical Aquifer Recharge Areas.
